The objective of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is to replace or rebalance hormones that are deficient or in excess, to restore optimum hormone balance.
Typically, this is for women who are experiencing changes in their hormones related to menopause, hysterectomies, PCOS, chronic stress, estrogen dominance, long term illness or toxicity. BHRT can be used for prolonged periods of time or short term until other aspects of health are restored.
BHRT is prescribed through regular pharmacies or compounded for more individualized fine-tuned hormone doses. These can be administered as topical creams, patches, oral medication, or injection.
Each patient is evaluated with lab work, detailed family history, past medical history, and current symptoms before initiating treatment. Lab work includes female hormone levels, complete blood cell count, urinalysis, comprehensive metabolic panel, lipid panel and measuring inflammation markers in the body. For healthy maintenance patients are required to be evaluated every three to six months for labs as well as making any adjustments to the hormone script for best outcome.
Those with history of hormone sensitive cancers, a primary female relative who currently or who has passed due to hormone sensitive cancers are not appropriate for BHRT.
